The Parable of the Talents – Bags of Gold

If you are a Christian, this story should hit home with you. If you are a non-believer, this story also should be a reminder of why laziness destroys our mankind. We call this one of seven deadly sin, the sloth.

Synopsis:

What it is: Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

Why you do it: You’re shiftless, lazy, and good for nothing’.

Your punishment in Hell will be: You’ll be thrown into snake pits.

Sloth

The story:

14 Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, which called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag,[a] each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

Talents2

19 After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’

21 His master replied, ‘well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

22 The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’

Money

23 His master replied, ‘well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

24 Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

26 His master replied, ‘you wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

28 so take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Talents and money

Footnotes:

  1. Matthew 25:15 Greek five talents … two talents … one talent; also throughout this parable; a talent was worth about 20 years of a day laborer’s wage.

Here is the question, what do you want to do with your life? The most common answer is, “I dunno!” If this is your answer, you better do some soul searching and find what burns inside you.

What is your passion in life?

  1. Do you want to be a bodybuilder? – Join a gym and start pumping iron, diet, and compete
  2. Do you want to be a Nurse? – Enroll in nursing school and get your BSN degree
  3. Do you want to lose some weight? – Proper diet and exercising avoiding junk foods
  4. Do you want to make money? – Learn everything about investing to acquiring a job that will pay you well
  5. Do you want to own a business? – Learn everything about your business and write a business plan to start a business

Talents

Did you get the picture? Do you feel it?  Can you hear it? If you want something, you got to DO something about it in order to get something. You just CANNOT just sit around and play XBOX 360, Facebook, and watch TV all day long and expect to gain something. The great book of Bible even teaches us not to be lazy and DO something about it.

The phrase “God helps those who help themselves” should be the motto for all of us. We often expect someone or somebody to help us with everything. It starts with you and you MUST go after what you want in life yourself. It is your journey. Once you figure it out, “The Luck” will follow you. Oprah, who is worth 2.7 billion dollars, states, “I feel that luck is preparation meeting opportunity.” Which means, we must create our own luck with some hard work plus finding that passion and going after it. -SjC

Ditto? Did you read the story? I like to hear your take on the story instead of trying to earn points for punchtab.

Yes I read it and Amen isn’t really a take on the story either anyone can say that, you never explained if you agree or disagree or how you felt about the story. My take on the story if you really want to know is that I agree with it. I believe strongly that what you put into something is what you get out of it. :0)
